Are you ready for Windows 10?

Microsoft released Windows 10 to the consumer market on July 29 2015, highly anticipated

and long overdue after the failed performance of Windows 8 Microsoft is has been aggressively pushing out Windows 10 implementations through Windows update.

Many corporations migrated over since the first stable release was made public, in their case they’ve been running the Operating system on test environments since the beta release so they worked out all the details and compatibility issues before the rollout. We can now say that Windows 10 is a stable Operating System ready to be implemented by the masses but we still find companies hesitant to take the plunge.

There are many reasons why companies are postponing a Windows 10 upgrade, many of them valid but others don’t really have justification. As an MSP providing Network and Desktop Services to Small businesses we get experience firsthand the many reasons organizations have to delay Windows 10 implementation. The following is a list of what we find to be the general consensus:

They want to wait until all the bugs are fixed: This is a legit reason however it can be used as an excuse as well. As stated earlier, by now Windows 10 is a solid platform. The days of the major bugs and issues are over, that’s not to say that the OS is perfect or that there won’t be more issues and update but from the software architecture point of view the job is done. There will more updates, patches, and hot fixes as is the case with any Microsoft Operating System but it is now on a stable state.

We have to test for Application Compatibility: Yes, as mentioned earlier, this is a valid reason that can sometimes be used as an excuse. What is interested about this is that sometimes companies that rely entirely on cloud services worry about application compatibility, they don’t realize they don’t have anything to be compatible with since all their services are in the cloud. Not to minimize its importance, testing for application compatibility is paramount before a Windows 10 rollout, especially if you have customized applications.

We have to test for Hardware Compatibility: Absolutely, it has to be tested. Microsoft made easy for us, almost any computer that is currently running Windows 7 or Windows 8 is a good candidate for a successful upgrade to Windows 10.

The minimum requirement for Windows 10 are very basic, as a matter fact, I don’t even how anyone can run any OS on the minimum hardware requires as it would be slow.

To run Windows 10 you need: 1 BG RAM, 16 GB HD, Graphic card with DirectX 9 or WDDM, and a 800x600 display. Again, if you are successfully running Windows 7 and Windows 8 most likely you already meet the minimum requirements.

They don’t have the expertise for the upgrade: As simple as the upgrade is I do not recommend to any Small business upgrading to Windows 10 to do it without having technical expert company on their side so when I hear that I completely agree with them and remind them that we can now take care of it for them, after all that is one of the areas we specialized in. There are many things that could go wrong during an upgrade and having an unexperienced person doing it does not help either.

They don’t’ want to go through the learning curve: understandably so, especially if you went from Windows 7 to Windows 8. The learning curve to adapt to the new OS was painful and time consuming for many. That is not case for Windows 10, it seems to me Microsoft learned its lesson and this time did a good job creating a GUI that is intuitive enough for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users alike. Yes, there are many things people have to get used but based on experience from many of our customers they are major issues or something that would cause an employee to slow down.

Whatever the reason is, valid or invalid, to upgrade to Windows 10 the time to move up to the new OS will come, Microsoft software life cycle shows Extended Support to Windows 7 to end on 2020 and 2023 for Windows 8. Though it may sound as an eternity other applications are ending support to Windows 7 and 8 OS so it's more beneficial to move into the platform than delaying years down the row, not only that, Windows 10 offers a plethora and upgrades and benefits not available in the previous versions of the Operating System.
